To do this, one of our medical practitioners draws just enough blood for the procedure into vials and places it into our centrifuge machine to spin, separating the platelets from the rest of the blood. There is virtually no risk of allergic reaction or intolerance because PRP is autogenous, meaning it’s derived from your own blood.

Expectations of PRP
With little to no downtime, PRP is effective at reducing the telltale signs of aging. It takes 3-4 weeks for results to appear, but it typically lasts 12-18 months after your course of treatments. Platelet Rich Plasma, more often referred to as PRP, utilizes a cross-section of your blood to stimulate your body’s healing process. When combined with microneedling, it promotes collagen production and healthy skin. The treatment results in tighter skin that softens fine lines and wrinkles while improving tone and texture.
PRP is used in conjunction with microneedling for dramatic improvements in your skin. The platelet-rich plasma is produced by drawing blood from a patient and placing the vials into a specialized centrifuge machine.
PRP is harvested from a patient’s blood. This blood is spun in a specialized centrifuge at high speed until it separates into three parts. The lower part of the blood contains red blood cells, and the top-level has platelet-poor plasma, but in the center is a thin level of plasma rich in white blood cells and platelets referred to as the buffy coat. It’s this layer that we use to treat patients.
Our practice focuses on the facial treatments for anti-aging, but PRP is widely used in sports medicine to accelerate the healing process of sport-related injuries. PRP has also become quite popular in treating hair loss as well. Since PRP is harvested from your blood cells and encourages healing, it can be used in most parts of the body.
Micro wounds caused by microneedle punctures trigger the platelets to swing into action. Activated platelets heal skin tissue by encouraging collagen growth and vascular repair, resulting in tighter, brighter, and smoother skin.
Pain is subjective, and while some patients don’t experience any pain, it is not uncommon for others to feel some moderate discomfort. Microneedling is performed using tiny needles that do not harm the skin and are very well tolerated. Prior to treatments, we apply a topical numbing cream for sensitive patients who might experience a mild burning or tingling sensation.

Typically, PRP treatments take an hour or two to complete. Thirty minutes of this time is reserved to draw and process blood into platelet-rich plasma. While you wait for your blood to be processed, a clinician will disinfect the treatment area and apply a numbing cream to diminish any discomfort during the procedure.
Though results are not immediate, patients typically begin to notice their skin tightening with improvement in tone after a week. You will continue to see improved skin health over the next four to six months.
Though you may require a few PRP treatments, the results can last over 18 months before you need to consider another treatment. Speak with your clinician on how you can extend your results even longer using a specialized home skincare regimen. We might not be able to stop the aging process, but PRP can sure slow it down.
There is very little to no downtime associated with PRP treatments. Some patients may experience some redness or mild swelling, but these symptoms typically resolve within 24 hours. Combined with microneedling, these symptoms may take longer to go away. Many people choose to set appointments near the end of the week, so they can take the weekend to recover.
Most patients will notice results following their first treatment; however, we typically suggest three sessions to maximize treatment results. With that being said, everyone is unique and will have different skincare needs. Some individuals may require more treatments or even yearly refreshers to keep a healthy glow.
Wrinkle relaxers like Botox offer dramatic results almost immediately. They paralyze the muscle, reducing the muscle’s ability to make certain wrinkle-causing expressions. Platelet-rich plasma improves your skin over time, but it does not prevent your muscles from causing wrinkles. Discuss with your clinician about your skin type and what will offer you the best result. Keep in mind that both therapies can work in harmony to reduce the effects of aging while refreshing your skin.

Make sure to hydrate well both the day of and before your treatment. Being well hydrated takes some stress off your body, allowing for easier blood draws. For optimal results, avoid anti-inflammatories drugs like Asprin, Aleve, Advil, and Ibuprofen for the next two weeks. If you are feeling any discomfort, we recommend Tylenol.

PRP therapies are some of the safest cosmetic procedures performed today. Because the platelet-rich plasma is harvested from your blood cells, there is very little chance of an adverse reaction. You can expect some temporary redness, bruising, and mild swelling post-treatment. These symptoms typically diminish over the next 24 hours or so.
Make sure not to touch or scratch your face 6–24 hours post-treatment. Be sure to spend your next 24 hours in a clean space with unpolluted air. Avoid stressful situations that can hinder your body’s healing process. And of course, make sure you get plenty of sleep; people didn’t coin the term “beauty sleep” for nothing after all.
PRP therapies are considered very safe by medical professionals worldwide. People with any health conditions like compromised immune systems, an active infection, or bleeding disorders should consult with their physician before considering platelet-rich plasma treatments. As with any beauty treatment we offer, you’re often at risk of receiving extra compliments. We suggest wearing simple yet boring clothing with a large floppy hat that hides your beautiful face to avoid unwanted attention.
